Cool Ass Comics: Marvel Godzilla Edition! Part 1

This edition features my Marvel Godzilla Comic collection that ran from August of 1977 to July of 1979. Unfortunately, I'm missing issue number 19 of this 24 issue series. This first part features the covers (and two back covers) from issues #1 through #6. You'll recognize some big Marvel Universe names on some of the covers.

Issue #1 August 1977

Issue #2 September 1977

Back cover to issue #2; interesting that ORCA is being advertised as 'opening in July at a theater near you' considering that was close to two months prior to this issue hitting the stands. Issue #3 also advertised ORCA on its back cover.

Issue #3 October 1977

Issue #4 November 1977

Issue #5 December 1977

Issue #5 back cover; remember these?

Issue #6 January 1978

TO BE CONTINUED....

venom, I acquired comics only randomly in those days, but I well remember Godzilla 3. I thought it was the most awesome thing I'd seen in my whole young life that Hercules was able to block that big foot and throw the King of the Monsters on his back!

As for those Orca ads, back then comics were usually dated two or three months in advance of their actual publication dates, presumably to maximize shelf life, so those issues would have appeared in advance of the movie after all.

Hey, Sam, thanks for that info! I am curious, though, why that the Marvel Essentials Collection of this series is in B/W when the original issues were in color? At least I've read that it's in B/W.

If Marvel Essentials are the black-spined "phone book" editions then they're all in black and white regardless of any original colors. DC has a "Showcase" line in a similar format and lack of color.

Oh, okay. I don't have any of those, then. The only comics I truly loved in B/W were the old SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN THE BARBARIAN comic magazines from Marvel. I still got a healthy amount of those as well as the color and less violent Marvel comics series, CONAN THE BARBARIAN and KING CONAN.

Speaking of those collections, I really wanna get my hands on the EC comics collection series. I have a large number of the reprints, but I'd like to get all of them including the Shock SuspenseStories line.

Wow great post venom, talk about a walk down memory lane. I collected comics when I was a kid and I clearly remember Godzilla #1-3 for some reason. It is weird how the covers to issues #2 and #3 bring back so many memories for me.

Seeing the Orca ads and the Spalding ads are also a real treat!

Speaking of Savage Sword of Conan, that was one of my all time favorite comic mags ever. Even though I have quite a few in my old comic collection I recently bought a bunch of the reprint books of the series that Dark Horse puts out. They are still a fantastic read.

Thanks again for sharing these comics with us, it is like a treasure trove of memories for me.

No problem, Fazeo! I will likely post the remainder tomorrow, or the next day. I just need to get my hands on issue 19.

I also got the whole nine issue set of DEVIL DINOSAUR to post up, too, sometime or other.

I enjoyed more than a few of these comics, back in the day! The comics are better than Orca! Nice to know I wasn't the only one to like these, venoms5! A fun post!

The artist for these, Herb Trimpe, was one of my favorite artists on The Incredible Hulk; he also drew the introductory story of X-Man Wolverine.

Yeah, these old comics are vastly different from the comics of today. I've got some Jademan comics from Hong Kong lined up soon. I'm a huge fan of ORCA, by the way. An underrated movie in my book.

Oh! I neglected to add yesterday that Orca is enjoyable on its own terms! (FedEx showed up while I was typing, so I got distracted enough to complete the thought when I was typing.) It's one of the first movies I made a point of waiting for to come on TV after reading the Medved brothers' Golden Turkey Awards book! (Believe it or not, I've actually seen Dondi with David Janssen; the kid playing the lead is AWFUL!)

I didn't know the Godzilla comics were available in one of those fat Essentials! That's one I've got to pick up!

EC Comics are great! If you happen upon reprints (or originals) of a comic called Impact, look for a story called "Master Race"; a great read (though it's mostly told visually)!

Yeah, the Godzilla Essentials is B/W, unfortunately. DONDI? I think that's in one of the Medved books I have. Not seen it, though. I may be wrong, but those EC IMPACT! comics may have been republished in a collection, too. Maybe not recently, but back when the EC reprints were in vogue.

Back when TBS still had reruns of old TV shows and movies, from out of nowhere, they showed Dondi one day, and I had the sense to tape it for watching later. (The tape is long since gone.) It's an adaptation of a comic strip I read some when I was little! (It had soap opera plots, but the artist's style caught my eye.) I don't think even Warner Archive will put this on a DVD-r; let's just say what the Medveds said about it is accurate!

I do know of the times when EC material got reprinted in the late '80s-early '90s, so if Impact is one of the books, that's something I gotta check for! (I'd like my own copy of "Master Race".)

There's quite a few series of comics out on DVD, so it's great to know Godzilla is, too!

Thanks for the tip, venoms5, in addition to your other ones!

venoms5 said...

No, those are links for the IMPACT book(s) you was looking for.

Fang Shih-yu said...

I was thinking Godzilla because your post was about Godzilla! OOPS! (Is it obvious I sometimes skim what I read?)

Thanks for the Impact info...and the further clarification, venoms5! :o)

No problem, Russ. I hope you're able to get that issue you're after!

I only wish I had been young enough to grab these when they first came out, how sweet it must have been to see Godzilla fighting the Marvel heroes! But alas, my comic book days are over V.. Now I rely on the movies and not my brain to bring the heroes to life..

There was this little convenience store in town when we moved here called 'The Hop-In'. I used to get most of my comics and comic magazines there.
