Assorted Bits & Pieces: Hudson Horror Show 666 in Poughkeepsie, NY!

Official press release:
On Saturday, December 1st, 2012 (12-1-12), Hudson Horror Show 666 will present a whopping six movies (for the price of five) along with shorts and vintage trailers, all off rare 35mm films.  It’s a massive, sweaty 12 hour explosion of horror and exploitation!

This is by the far the biggest and most diverse lineup of movies we have ever presented.  The show starts and heaven will be torn asunder as you run from, THE DEVIL’S RAIN!  Starring Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner, Tom Skerrit, and an appearance by John Travolta, this is the coolest of the Satan Chic classics from the 70’s.
One of the greatest exploitation movies of all time, SWITCHBLADE SISTERS, tells the story of the Dagger Debs, the tough as nails girl gang whose members were hot as hell.  Quentin Tarantino loves this movie, but hasn’t quite stolen from it yet!
Not many sequels can equal their predecessors, but PHANTASM II is one of the few. With more action, more midgets, and well, more balls, Phantasm II shatters the myth that all sequels suck.
There are no midgets in RE-ANIMATOR, but director Stuart Gordon’s unrated bloodbath has just about everything else.  Mad scientists, zombies, talking heads and the most insane oral sex scene ever committed to celluloid, this film is cinematic proof that Jeffrey Combs got robbed of a best actor Oscar in 1985.
Sound the trumpets of Crom, after 30 years; the original CONAN THE BARBARIAN makes it triumphant return to the big screen!  Forget the boring, anemic remake; Arnold Schwarzenegger’s breakout film delivers more blood, blades and boobs than most vintage slasher films.
Speaking of slasher films, what’s a Hudson Horror Show without one?  Have no fear as our mystery movie is now revealed to be the original BLACK CHRISTMAS.  Again, screw the remake; this is the original yuletide horror classic from 1974, which many claim to be the very first true slasher film.  And any movie starring John Saxon just kicks major ass!
Be sure to bring extra cash as we will have vendors selling more wares than ever before.  Comic books, movie posters, super cool magnets, rare DVD’s, t-shirts, artwork and more will up for grabs at HH666.  Horror author Jason Gehlert will even be in attendance signing copies of his brand spanking new book, Jeremiah Black.  This book sounds even sicker and more twisted than Jason’s other works, for all of his info go to www.facebook.com/jason.gehlert.
Advance tickets are $26.00 in advance at our website, if any day tickets remain, they will be $30.00 at the door day of show, cash only.  Doors open at noon, show starts at 1PM and runs until 12AM.  One ticket gets you entry in and out all day long.

Cool Ass Cinema Book Reviews: Showdown Edition!

THE GREAT SHOWDOWNS

By Scott C.

144 pages; hardcover; color; first edition September 2012

Scott C. is an artist, painter and illustrator of comics and kids books. He's even dabbled in video games. His work has been showcased in galleries and publications worldwide. Many of his cinematic pieces are gathered in this collection, The Great Showdowns, due out October 30th, 2012. Predominantly leaning towards popular, well known and classic science fiction films, the artwork consists of lively, humorous instances of conflict as per the books title.

The images evoke a child-like sensibility that leap off the page. Those with an interest in paintings and young-at-heart, "cute" drawing styles, will be the main audience for this publication. Within these pages you'll find some classic confrontations as diverse as SPINAL TAP, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, BEETLEJUICE, JAWS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, ALIENS, THE THING and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON to name a small sampling.

Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser MD) contributes a touching Foreword and there's an Introduction by Scott Campbell, the author.

Cool Ass Cinema Book Reviews: James Bond Omnibus Edition!

THE JAMES BOND OMNIBUS 004

Written by Jim Lawrence

Art by Yaroslav Horak

Based on the character created by Ian Fleming

288 pages; softcover; B/W; first edition 2012

In 1962, Iam Fleming's famed secret agent, James Bond 007, sprang from the printed page to the silver screen in DR. NO, an action spy picture starring Sean Connery. That film started a multi-million dollar enterprise that extends to this day. Outside of the cinematic and written word spectrum, James Bond was also very popular as a newspaper comic strip that spanned over three decades. Many of these were based on Ian Fleming stories that became movies and a good number of others were original works.

Titan Books has issued a license to read on this fourth volume of nine original daily newspaper strips. All nine stories first appeared in the 1970s and have been gathered and presented "uninterrupted" ie in non-serialized form, for rabid James Bond fans everywhere.

The artistry of Yaroslav Horak is of high quality and I thought this comic strip Bond looked more like Lazenby's rendition than either Connery or Moore; the latter actor being who was essaying the character at the time these strips (see image at right) were being produced.

Titan Books continues to produce quality tomes of varying subjects and this new release of vintage Bond newspaper strips will no doubt please hardcore fans of the legendary British spy. Casual fans will likely find this of little interest, but fans of art and comics in general may also be intrigued to see how this phenomenally popular character of novels and screen is interpreted in serial form. Only here in this omnibus, you don't have to wait till the next day to see what happens next!
